Governed by a Board of stakeholders, MCSP is a community assistance tool providing valuable services to Kansas City metropolitan communities. Ordered by the courts to complete community service in lieu of incarceration, clients are assigned to support community-policing activities and select non-profit organizations. Rather than sitting idle in a jail cell at taxpayer expense, MCSP clients complete a variety of charitable and community work activities that would otherwise not be performed.
Mission - To provide a non-profit, self-supporting sanction to the criminal justice system, as a tool for returning the offender to society in a meaningful way; while at the same time, restoring resources to the community.
Who Benefits - MCSP supports various community organizations including Harvesters, Kansas City Zoo, Restart, etc., as well as the community policing activities of local police departments that work directly with neighborhoods. MCSP also supports local government services to communities by supplementing personnel needs (Public Works, Parks and Recreation Departments, Community Centers). These organizations receive cost-free labor, reducing their personnel expenses and allowing them to provide additional assistance to their communities as a result of that savings.
Program Funding - MCSP is a non-profit organization funded through fees paid by the individuals sentenced to serve community service, by donations from the public sector and through program contracts.
Does It Work? - Annually, the MCSP receives nearly 5,000 clients who contribute more than 300,000 hours of no-cost labor to the community.
