PSN and Operation Ceasefire

Creating Safer Neighborhoods by Reducing Gun Crimes

Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) is a nationwide initiative designed to create safer neighborhoods by reducing gun crimes and sustaining that reduction. PSN is a unique partnership between local, state and federal agencies led by the U.S. Attorney in each of the 94 federal districts. Each U.S. Attorney implements prevention efforts through community outreach and media campaigns and ensures law enforcement and prosecutors have training necessary to make the program work.

Kansas City's PSN initiative falls under the Western District of Missouri and is routinely recognized on the national level as one of the top 5 districts for prosecutions.

Established in 2001, PSN focuses on partnerships, strategic planning, training, outreach and accountability to address specific gun crime problems. In 2006, PSN began an anti-gang initiative. By June 2007, PSN celebrated the 1,000th conviction for federal firearms violations under the initiative and announced a pledge to pursue 1,000 more in the years to follow.

Our local PSN iniciative also supports youth anti-gang intervention and prevention strategies through POSSE (Peers Organized to Support Student Excellance) at targeted high schools in Kansas City. In addition, Old Northeast Inc. is funded to support advanced graffiti abatement in neighborhoods.

Operation Ceasefire is an awareness and education campaign targeting convicted felons who carry firearms. Using proven techniques, Operation Ceasefire delivers a stern message to felons that carrying guns will have swift, certain and severe consequences. "Felons with Guns Burn 5 Years in Federal Prison."
